Ask any designer, where is the one place in the home that gets neglected the most in terms of styling and they'll agree, it's the poor little washroom. This is a shame because it's so easy to to get a handle on the smaller rooms of your home, especially one that everyone in your family visits multiple times a day and guests will most likely spend time focusing on and judging, behind closed doors.
If you're lucky enough to have a bathroom that has been updated in the last 20 years, you've skipped a massive hurtle, but even the most outdated of bathrooms can be brought back to life and made pretty with just a few upgrades. First off, clear everything out of the space, EVERYTHING. Deep clean every crevice and if you need to, throw a fresh coat of any shade of white on those walls and vanity if it needs it. When bringing all your toiletries back in, cut the fat and throw out every half bottle of shampoo, hairspray, funky hair brush and basket of scrunchies you own, Please! Pare it down to the every day essentials and find space in the vanity drawers and cabinets, completely out of sight, off the counter tops and make it a point to keep it that way. If you must, a pretty soap dispenser or cutsie collection of perfume bottles can stay out, but that's it kids!
Upgrade your towels! Its amazing what a fresh set of towels can do to change your everyday. They will be on display, so make sure they are clean, matching and I prefer to keep it white, crisp, with maybe a stripe or a simple turkish tassel at the very most.
If you have a free blank wall, hang a photo or print that is representative of your personality or that is cohesive with the rest of your home's story. Are you a jokester and want to have something quippy and cute? Are you a smarty pants and want to make people reflect? Are you a hip artsy fart and want something rock and roll or avante garde? Or are you a naturalist and want something soothing and organic? Whatever it is, slap it in a simple frame and move on to your next and most important task.... finding the perfect rug.
I love a vintage Persian, Kilim or Moroccan rug more then is normal and natural. Something about a pretty rich Persian, a faded Oushak, a vibrant Azilal or a flat woven Kilim brings in again, something personalized, special, and transforms this utilitarian space into a real thing of interior beauty. Don't worry about them getting wet. If they are vintage, they have been around longer than you have so I think they can handle a few daily clean wet footprints. Also, if they're made of natural fibers they tend to withstand the daily beating of a modern american family. If you opt for something with a thicker pile, just hang it up to dry so it doesn't get musky.
For rugs, my go to is always Etsy. It takes hours of rug hunting to find the "perfect match" but use your filters and when you do find it, its exhilarating, feels meant to be and you'll more often then not, come in under budget and get it straight from Turkey or Morocco. Also a plus, bathroom runners are small so typically more plentiful and cheaper. If you can't find what you're looking for on Etsy, I also hit up Ebay and do a quick Pinterest keyword search to see if any obscure sources catch my eye. This also takes time, but again, totally worth it.
A few last little bathroom accents that are pretty and functional, if you have the extra floor space, is a perfectly placed raw wooden or woven stool of some sort, pretty baskets for extra rolled towels, toilet paper or reading materials, if people still read anything but their phones on the toilet anymore, I'm not sure, but at least the thought was given. Bathrooms are also a great place for plants believe it or not, as long as there is some natural light. The steam will trick them into thinking they're outside, silly plants, and they bring in a spa like ambiance that takes it all to the next level.
Ok, well, there you have it. Clean your GD bathroom, keep it simple crisp and white aside from the floor covering and art and add layers of organic texture and life with wood, woven storage and living green potted friends. Now go make your family proud.
